There are two criteria I use to judge whether I will do business with a dealer: 1. If possible, I prefer small, privately owned businesses, ideally a married couple because they understand they must provide a service that leaves a customer feeling good about the experience. Their livelihood generally depends upon the manner in which they interact with a potential customer. 2. Whether they respond to my questions by fully answering them, and in a timely manner. In the case of my search for an optimal business that handles smaller RVs, I sent five written messages out to dealers in the Salt Lake region, including one to Idaho Falls. I wrote a few questions addressing the type of small camper I was looking for, and a request for an out-the-door quote. I also asked if they would consider a veterans discount. Two dealers never responded; one did not answer my questions completely, another one gave me a quote that was clearly too high.
\nTeton Adventures is a small mom and pop dealer owned by John and Bobbette Thompson specializing in smaller, well-made RV campers. They are located in Idaho Falls, Idaho. When I received a reply from John, it was complete, all questions answered, and included was a written out-the-door quote with a fair discount. He gave me a brief biographical sketch of his business, his personal cell phone number, email address, and encouraged me to call if I had further questions. This impressed me, so I took his advice and gave him a call. We talked for a short period and it was immediately apparent to me that he was a down to Earth, easy to talk to, genuinely honest man. There was no sales pressure, just a conversation to get to know each other. I set up an appointment to drive up from North Ogden, Utah (2.5-hour drive) to meet with him and review what he had to offer. John and his maintenance technician actually met me at the door when I arrived about a half hour before his business normally opened. They showed me two RVs that included the specifications I requested. It might have taken ten minutes of looking the two rigs over to convince me of the one I wanted. John and Ken continued to discuss, in detail, the salient features of this RV camper. A pleasant conversation ensued as we sought to just get to know each other. I have been around for over seventy-five years and have dealt with many different dealers for cars, trucks, and other costly items; but John and Teton Adventures ranks among the best dealers I have ever dealt with. No sales pressure, he answered every question I had, and the final sale actually took less than ten minutes, although we continued to talk for close to an hour.
\nI grew up in the Midwest at a time when a handshake and a man's word meant everything. John is that kind of man, and it was abundantly clear to me that he was someone who was willing to stake his honor on what he said. This is a small company, they deal in rather specific, smaller RV campers, and if you are looking for this type of camper, I highly support and enthusiastically recommend taking the time to visit and talk with John and his staff. You will leave satisfied, impressed, and perhaps even convinced to do business with a man who proudly stands by his word. It is a real pleasure to disclose this brief written support for John, Bobbette, and the staff at Teton Adventures.
